Cupcakes by the beach, Rehoboth Beach that is.

19 Jul

I was very excited to take my cupcake crusade even further north this past week, as my husband and I joined my family in Lewes, Delaware for a vacation.  I love Lewes! (“where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean”) It’s charming, it’s quaint, it’s historic, it has a farmer’s market, it’s far far away from I-495…  The only downside- no cupcakery.  Now, the Lewes Bake Shoppe on 2nd St.  is certainly worth visiting for other baked good cravings.  And it was here that I learned of today’s subject.  The kind woman working at the Bake Shoppe that day said there was a cupcake place near the boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach that had really good cupcakes.  A quick google search and a few moment later, Cake Break ( a gourmet cupcake company) was on my radar!

The boardwalk at Rehoboth was about 20 minutes from where we were staying in Lewes, so we decided to make the most of our outing.  With my sister, brother-in-law, niece, 2 nephews, and husband in tow we set out for a day at Rehoboth’s Funland on the boardwalk and then a pit stop at Cake Break.  Luckily, the cupcakery was very close to Funland and we basically walked by it on our way back to the car (it’s not even a block off the main drag, Rehoboth Ave).  I was so tempted to beg the gang to stop in BEFORE hitting the amusements, I mean I was jonesing cupcakes bad!  But my wiser company convinced me to wait.  It’s a good thing too, because those teacups were a lot more dizzying than I remember.  So, fast forward many rides and games and screams and laughs and stuffed animal prizes and pizza, and we were entering Cake Break just as the sun was setting!  (They close at 10pm, EVERYDAY, which is awesome!)

A little side discussion – I gotta give props to Cake Break for opening a cupcakery by the beach AND boardwalk.  When I think boardwalk, my mouth just waters for the crispy french fries, powdered sugary funnel cakes, hot hot dogs, and sticky salt water taffy.  That’s a tough crowd to compete with, but Cake Break is bringing some delicious variety to the boardwalk table.  Rock on Cake Break!

The place is still fairly new – just 9 weeks old.  And from what I gathered, Cake Break is a husband/wife endeavor.  The shop isn’t huge and it isn’t teeny.  There’s a store front window with a few retro barstools to sit and eat at.  As soon as you walk in, there it is – the case!  A big glass display filled with the goods.  Lots and lots to choose from.

Did I choose just one?  Nope.  Four! But I was with my husband, so I think technically I chose two.  The staff was very friendly and offered information on their favorites /signature cupcake.  Three cool features that stand out here folks!  1) They make cupcake smoothies.  With actual cupcakes, icing and all, mixed in.  2) They offer curbside pick-up, which is pretty cool considering how crazy parking near the strip can get,  and 3) Kids 10 and under can decorate their own cupcake with several bottles of sprinkles to choose from.   I think my niece particularly appreciated this feature.

Our selection included the following:

-Lemon Drop: Vanilla cake, buttercream and lemon curd.  Have I mentioned how much I LOVE lemon curd?  Not so much the word “curd”, but that concoction is good.

-Carrot Cake:  A staff favorite.  Cream cheese frosting

-Red Velvet:  More cream cheese frosting

 and last but not least…

-Chocolate Chocolate Chip (I think this was its name):  Chocolate cake with chips of chocolate covered in ganache.

My sister and her family of 5 picked out 4 cupcakes, so they definitely have a better handle on showing restraint 🙂  The verdict:  Good eatin’!  Soft and spongy cake that tasted very fresh.  I loved the Lemon Drop topping but the cake didn’t have a ton of flavor.  The chocolate chip one was awesome- I was licking that wrapper.  Red velvet and carrot were also very good, again- cream cheese frosting doesn’t make me go as wild as ganache and buttercream.  I kind of liked the fact that the red velvet cake wasn’t the flaming artificial red dye color, it was more of a red brown.  When I’m pigging out, I want to at least tell myself that what I’m eating (or at least most of it) is all natural!  It was a tie between the Lemon Drop and the carrot for Steve (my husband). My sister enjoyed her Phil-ees cupcake with chocolate filling and Hershey kiss on top.  My brother-in-law was kind of disappointed that his carrot cake cupcake wasn’t completely topped with frosting.  He likes a full-frosting cover on his cupcake.  My niece said her Fantasia cupcake was pretty good, and it sure was pretty!

Here’s the breakdown folks!

 2. Room temperature:  Yes, indeed.

3. Vegan or gluten free options:  Yup!  Both of the chocolate variety.

4. To-go packaging:  Cardboard box with the handy dandy dividers.   Snazzy logo sticker on top.

 5. Milk for sale?: Yes!  And organic coffee, flavored lemonades, and don’t forget the cupcake smoothies!

7.  Ambiance:  Ho hum.  This is another place that could use a wave of the “cozy” wand.  Maybe some more cupcake artwork, softer lighting, perhaps some golden oldies on the radio.  It was very clean though, and the service was excellent!

Final Verdict:  The Chocolate Chocolate Chip cupcake will be taking the #3 spot on the “Top 10” list.
